SURVEY

SPECIALISED COMPONENTS

Open: 01-Nov-2020
Close: 07-Dec-2020

This is a rerun of a survey carried out by Zeataline in 2014 and relates to four specialised piping components used in the energy, chemicals, and resources sector. Surveys can be valuable for either investment, business, or career planning and not only the basic questions. An insight into the demographic of countries and disciplines involved and how they shift over time is potentially priceless. Here are four basic questions with two option answers: From recent projects you have encountered or been involved with please select which components were or are most likely specified?

PRESSURE TAPPINGS

Weldoflange

One single fitting is produced from a unique single forging to replace the 2 or 3 separate components of a conventional branch assembly.

Fabricated

Generally a weldolet or reducing tee followed by a nipple and flange.

DOUBLE BLOCK & BLEED

Monoblock

These valves offer cost, time, space and weight savings.

Fabricated

Generally a short flanged spool with a small branch connection, two isolation valves and a small bleed valve.

FLANGE TYPE

Compact

Offering weight savings of up to 88% when compared to the equivalent ASME Flange. Quick and easy make-up with superior mechanical strength and fatigue performance however, relatively expensive.

Standard

ASME B16.5 or B16.47 series A and B, very heavy compared to compact flange however, have the advantage of being considered the industry standard.

WELDED BRANCHES

Pipet

WFI Nuclear Product inc. Houston re-engineered the olet to make them with a straight bore ID, which yields a smaller OD, for less weight and less weld and called them “Pipets”. Pipets are generally not known outside the USA.

Weldolet

Bonney patented their olet designs back in the late 30's. When patents expired, everyone copied them. Olets have been "Unlisted Components" in ASME B31.1 & B31.3 for many years. ASME have now incorporated MSS-SP-97 into the codes to cover most of the common olet items.
